I got my head around to building the necessary functionality for weapon upgrades in the game. Collecting a powerup will now bost your standard weapon to double shot, tripple shot, and then subsequently double the fire rate of the weapon in use.
Any damage taken will result in a downgrade of the current weapon's powerup.
Any powerup collected when fully boosted up and still in possession of full health will grant you a nice score boost.
The game now also counts how many shots you've fired (in case you're wondering, you trigger happy bunch)
The new build is up for playing. Yay!
